Transportation & Access

Building on one of our region’s biggest advantages—location—is a rock-solid transportation network that enables easy access to communities and consumers near and far.

As you might gather from our name, our region’s most significant transportation asset is Interstate 77. Not just because it provides non-stop north/south access from Columbia, South Carolina to Cleveland, Ohio—more so because of the access it provides to all points in between. An Interstate running from point A to point B is good, but it’s the connection to other assets such as airports, train yards, corporate campuses, consumers and other Interstates that makes I-77 truly great.

Businesses and residents in our region enjoy easy access to two major airports, each offering its own distinct advantages.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport

  • 140 non-stop destinations
  • 700 daily departures and landings
  • Seven domestic carriers and three foreign carriers
  • Serves 39 million passengers annually
  • 7th busiest airport in the word

Columbia Metropolitan Airport

  • 40 non-stop flights
  • 11 major destinations
  • Four major carriers
  • UPS Airline hub
  • Combines of good service with less congestion

Rock Hill – York County Airport

  • General aviation reliever airport
  • 5,500’ x 100’ runway
  • 20 miles south of Charlotte Douglas International
  • 7,200 Sq. Ft. Terminal with conference room and large concourse

Other regional/community airports include:

  • Chester Municipal Airport
  • Fairfield County Airport

Norfolk Southern Railroad operates a major North/South route through the SC I-77 Alliance region with terminals at Charlotte in Columbia.

CSX Transportation also runs through the SC I-77 Alliance region. It intersects with the Norfolk Southern Line and Lancaster & Chester short line in Chester County.

The Lancaster & Chester Railroad (L&C) is a short line railroad based in Lancaster, South Carolina, 35 miles south of Charlotte, NC. The railroad provides dual-rail access to over 3,000 acres of industrially zoned property, located only 45 minutes from Charlotte Douglas International Airport. L&C operates 2 to 3 trains per day, based on customer needs. With 62 miles of track, the L&C provides customized, competitive rail freight service for its customers, connecting them to the national rail network through both CSX and Norfolk Southern.
