Background screening provider investing more than $2.7 million in new Richland County facility

COLUMBIA, S.C. – General Information Services, Inc. (GIS), one of the most experienced and largest background screening providers in the nation, is expanding its Midlands operations with a new facility in Richland County. The company is investing more than $2.7 million in the new facility, which will complement the firm’s existing Lexington County corporate headquarters. The expansion is expected to generate 91 new jobs over the next five years.

Established in 1966, GIS was initially focused on providing screening services exclusively to the insurance industry. After a change in ownership in 1996, GIS expanded dramatically, becoming one of the fastest growing technology companies in the nation. Today, with a workforce of more than 1,000 people, the firm provides its services to some of the world’s largest employers. In addition to its existing South Carolina operations, GIS operates a Western Operations Center in Dallas, Texas and sales offices throughout the nation.

To expand its Midlands operations, GIS is leasing 18,000 square-feet of office space at 1001 Pinnacle Point Drive in Columbia, S.C. The expansion and additional workforce will allow GIS to successfully meet increased customer demand. Those interested in joining the GIS team should visit the company’s career center page online. The Coordinating Council for Economic Development has approved a $50,000 grant to Richland County to assist with the costs of real property improvements related to the project.

QUOTES

“The management and employees of GIS are very excited about our new building location on the east side of Columbia. Over the past 20 years we have been growing our business and increasing the number of employees located at our Chapin Headquarters. Our continued growth allowed us to expand to the new location at Pinnacle Point. We expect to hire in excess of 200 people at that location over the next year. This location will also allow us to hire and employ professionals living in the northeast area around Interstate 20 and Interstate 77. We look forward to continued growth at this second location in Columbia.” –General Information Services CEO Raymond Conrad

“We are very excited about and proud of the new location at Pinnacle Point. Partnering with the Department of Commerce and Richland County made this a very smooth process, along with the work done by NAI Avant, 1X1 Design & Hood Construction to get the space renovated and up fitted for occupation.” –General Information Services CFO Sharon Mann

“It’s always a great day in South Carolina when we can celebrate the success of one of our existing companies. General Information Services has been doing business in our state since 1996, and this $2.7 million investment, which will create more than 90 new jobs in the Midlands, proves that the Team South Carolina approach is working.” –Gov. Nikki Haley

“While much of South Carolina’s recent economic success can be attributed to the growth of our manufacturing industry, announcements like today’s by GIS prove that the Palmetto State boasts a diverse economy and the right ingredients for businesses of all types to succeed.” –Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt

“Today’s announcement from GIS is more good news for Richland County and Columbia. We are glad to assist in the expansion of this fast growing company and to continue to diversify our local economy.” –Richland County Council Chairman Torrey Rush
